On Fateful Waters: Where New Worlds Meet Old Ambitions
April 8th

Rosendale Library Presents:
“On Fateful Waters: Where New Worlds Meet Old Ambitions”
NY Council for the Humanities Speaker: Dr. Robert Spiegelman

In concert with the 400th Anniversary Celebration of the “founding “ of the Hudson River, this lecture explores the contributions of explorers Henry Hudson, Samuel de Champlain and inventor Robert Fulton.

All three were carriers of powerful passions- Discovery, Settlement, Westward Expansion and Prosperity. But Spiegelman freshly re-examines these visions, including the intentions and plans of the ambitious international players who backed the missions. Spotlighted are the quest for the Northwest Passage and the forgotten and sometimes tragic fates met by those seeking glory and riches.
Included are remarkable excerpts from journals revealing early encounters between Europeans and indigenous “New Yorkers”.

This event is made possible by the New York Council for the Humanities a private, non-profit organization.

Wednesday April 8 @ 7pm
Free Admission

'Celebrate the Roof' Lawn Party
June 12th

Rosendale Library is ready to celebrate its new slate roof. There will be a “Celebrate the Roof” Lawn Party on Friday, June 12 from 5-7pm on the library lawn. Punch and cookies will be served.

Since May of 2008 the Rosendale community has been helping to raise the new roof by making donations of $50 per tile to match the grant received from the NY State Department of Education for $67,500. To date the community has raised $25,400. Grants received through Sen. Bonacic’s office in the amount of $25,000 have also been used to match the NYS Ed. grant. Since the total price tag for the roof will be $136,500, this means that the library will need to use $18,600 of its own funds. That amount represents only 13.6% of the total cost of the project.

The Raise the Roof Campaign is scheduled to run through June 30, 2009 and donations to the roof project will be gratefully accepted up to that date.

Please join us to celebrate a great community!
